Lionel Messi has won the FIFA Golden Ball (Ballon d’Or) Award, beating teammates Xavi and Andres Iniesta to the award. After scoring 43 goals last season, the 23-year-old Argentine lead Barcelona to another Spanish league title!
The FIFA Golden Ball Award, which merges both the FIFA player of the year with France Football’s Golden Ball, means Messi retains both awards after he won both back in 2009. The last player to win both awards consecutively was Ronaldinho, in 2004 and 2005.
In terms of the coach of the year award, Jose Mourinho was named men’s coach of the year after helping Inter Milan win the treble; Serie A, Coppa Italia and the Champions League.
