Our Predictions: Golden Globe Nominees For Film

The Golden Globes are this Sunday and we are ecstatic with questions! Who is going to take home what? Most people don’t really take the Golden Globes that seriously, because of its whole process of breaking motion pictures into a drama category and a musical or comedy category, but screw it! The Golden Globes are fascinating for us. They can be a good indicator for who’s going to take home the big ones at the Oscars.

Lets first of all get out of the way the best motion picture categories. There is no debate – The Social Network is taking home Best motion picture drama. It has already won practically everything else on the awards circuit and the bookies odds are on it taking home the Golden Globe. As for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy I predict The Kids Are All Right will be victorious. Maybe Alice In Wonderland will put up a small fight but I think Lisa Cholodenko’s comedy will be the front runner. Why on earth Red, Burlesque and The Tourist are in this category I am just clueless.

Best animated film will go to Toy Story 3, although I’m glad The Illusionist received a nomination. For Best Foreign Language film I think Biutiful will just about edge I Am Love, which had one of the most remarkable performances from Tilda Swinton.

Best Screenplay will be a really intriguing battle between Chris Nolan and Aaron Sorkin. The Oscars break down screenplays into original and adapted screenplay so if Nolan and Sorkin are nominated they wont have to compete. I’ve got a good feeling Sorkin will take Best Screenplay and although I love Inception as a cinematic gem, the screenplay did appear frail at times.

As for direction, David Fincher will capture Best Director over Chris Nolan. Last year, Kathryn Bigelow beat James Cameron at the Oscars to win Best Director however lost to him at the Golden Globes for the same award. If another science-fiction movie like Inception could pull off this shock again this year, it would be something special.

Now the interesting categories – the acting. First lets look at the blokes. Colin Firth will win Best Actor In A Motion Picture Drama, with Jesse Eisenberg his closest competition. Best Actor In A Motion Picture Musical or Comedy sees Johnny Depp competing against himself. But this wont matter because Jake Gyllenhaal should win for Love And Other Drugs. In terms of supporting actor in a motion picture Christian Bale will fight it over with Geoffrey Rush, but the welshman will prevail.

Now the ladies. Natalie Portman and Annette Bening should triumph in the prospective categories. It will be interesting to see what happens when they come together and compete at the Oscars. It’s important to note I’m so glad Halle Berry was recognized for toure-de-force turn in Frankie and Alice. Finally, Melissa Leo looks favourite to win best supporting actress.

We will see what happens this Sunday when the stars come together and Ricky Gervais presents. The awards season is about to hot up.
