Putting aside the fact that Man Utd’s league title challengers have been fumbling over the clean-cut verdure recently, United haven’t fussed or scrabbled, they kept their focus and kept the immaculate form on track. Even when they were playing inadequately they have managed to grind out those victories which any league winning team will pull out of the bag no matter what the circumstances.
Much attention has been given to Dimitar Berbatov and there is no question why. Last weekend he put three past Birmingham to complete his third hat-trick of the season and yesterday he scored a further two goals to ensure United maintained their unbeaten streak. However, there is one star for United who deserves an equal share of recognition and that is Javier Hernandez.
Since his move from Chivas last summer, Hernandez has featured primarily as a substitute. Yet he has contributed so much to the team. He has scored ten goals so far this season including an important one in the Champions League against Valencia during the group stages of the competition. What’s more important is that he always scores in important games. Yesterday he got the equalizer for United when they were 2-0 down to Blackpool, he scored the late winner against Stoke back in October and on New Years Day, when United were more then below par against West Brom, he headed in Wayne Rooney’s corner, which was enough for the Red Devils to sneak three points.
The 22 year old striker was absolutely outstanding in the World Cup for Mexico and he has begun to show his worth for the league leaders. He hasn’t had many starts but he has been fantastic when he has played. He’s not just a goal scorer but an overall team player – setting up goals, doing his bit defensively and contributing to United’s attacking flow and shift. Also there is a charming wit about this youngster – the kind of finesse and invention Rooney displayed when starting off for the Merseyside Blue. Football fanatics have been drooling over Van Der Vaart’s role in the success of Spurs, well what about Hernandez’s role in United’s success – this lad’s an absolute revelation!
Dimitar Berbatov is the leagues top scorer with nineteen goals this season and there is no question he is United’s player in form. Having said that, the purchase of Javier Hernandez last season from Chivas has been a tremendous coup for the Manchester outfit. This is his first season in the Big League and Sir Alex Ferguson hasn’t even started working his magic on the youngster yet. Just imagine what Hernandez will be able to do when Sir Alex grinds him toward his full potential.
